Last night was the first night of the Open Mic I'm hosting at Juna's Cafe on Ithaca Commons. I'd been worrying about this all week, worried that no one would show up. I'd put up a lot of flyers around the Commons and in Collegetown but I wasn't sure how many people would see them. As it turned out I needn't have worried. We had a good crowd and enough performers to keep things going until shortly before ten. About six people performed and they were all pretty competent. Most of the stuff was pretty standard jingle jangle, folky stuff, but there was one guy who came late and did this one long, meandering, soulful number and then left straight after who was pretty interesting and I hope he comes again.
I played The Rules, I Burnt My Lunch (two people requested it having remembered it from last year when I played the open mic here), and a song by Jeff Mangum, the Neutral Milk Hotel guy called Engine.
The overall vibe was very positive and a few people thanked me afterwards for bringing the open mic back after it's haitus. The next one is in two weeks April 10.
