Wishful thinking
(Adopts Barry Took voice) Attorney Ben Herman of Washington, DC writes:
"...English is not a Romance language--but I think that was the right answer to give Javier."

Another phone conversation with Javier Roig.
"Hello, can I speak to Professor Jonathan Culler please?"
"I'm sorry, he doesn't work in the Dean's office any more. I expect him to come by though. Can I take a message for him."
"No, I have already left a message with professor (unintelligible) in Romance Studies. Is this a romance language you are speaking?"
"Excuse me?"
"Is this a romance language you are speaking?"
"I believe so, yes."
"Thank you very much." (Hangs up)
